Description

Jefferson partial check from the day he resigned as Secretary of State under Washington

Third President of the United States (1801–1809), the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776), and one of the most influential Founding Fathers for his promotion of the ideals of Republicanism in the United States. Partial check, 2.75 x 2.25, filled out and signed by Jefferson, “Th: Jefferson,” payable to an unknown recipient for an unknown amount, and dated December 30, 1793. Check has been professionally inlaid into a 5.5 x 4.25 off-white sheet. This is the same date that Jefferson returned to Monticello after resigning as Secretary of State under George Washington. For more than a year Jefferson made repeated requests of Washington to resign his cabinet position, but each time he was persuaded to remain. Finally, at the end of 1793, he prevailed upon Washington to accept his resignation and returned to Monticello, with the belief he was retiring from public life forever. Jefferson was disillusioned with the new political system and it was his feeling that he was losing influence in the government. In fine condition, with some scattered light soiling. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
