Description

The very first professional football player downplays his All American status: “I happen to be one of the crowd that was picked but I do not claim I was one of the best.

The very first professional football player. TLS signed “W. W. Heffelfinger,” one page, 7.5 x 9.25, Heffelfinger Publications letterhead, March 12, 1936. Letter to a young admirer. In part, “I am enclosing an All America team that was picked by some thirty coaches from thirty colleges. You can take this for what it is worth. I happen to be one of the crowd that was picked but I do not claim I was one of the best. I am satisfied, however, with the proposition that I played to the best of my ability.” The team mentioned in the letter is affixed to bottom, with Heffelfinger’s name second from the top, with other notables including Nagurski, Grange, Thorpe, and Schultz. In very good condition, with trimmed edges, mounting remnants to top corner tips, some light soiling and even overall toning. Auction LOA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
