Description

Incentive: Smythe offers Kennedy a performance bonus for the 1950–51 season

Smythe Conn (1895–1980) was a longtime owner of the Maple Leafs and chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame; Ted Kennedy (born 1925) was a Canadian-born hockey player inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966. Two items: 1950 document on Maple Leaf Gardens letterhead, an agreement to award Kennedy a bonus of $3,000 if he scores 30 goals or 70 points during the 1950–51 season, signed “Conn Smythe” and “T. Kennedy”; and a handwritten statement in pencil on an off-white 5 x 7.5 sheet, “If I score 30 goals during the 1950–51 hockey season my contract will call for $15,000. If I should fail to score 30 goals my contract will call for a $12,000 salary,” signed “T. Kennedy.” Light handling wear, corner chip, and staples holes to first document, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
