General during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 (1751–1829) who served as Secretary of War under Thomas Jefferson. ALS signed “H. Dearborn,” one page, 6 x 7.5, November 2, 1801. Dearborn writes to Mr. Lewis. In full: “It would be convenient for me to consider your services in the office as ending this day. I hope you will find immediate employment which will be agreeable to you. I think it is but just to say, that your conduct in this office, as far as it has come to my knowledge, has been satisfactory.” Matted and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 19.25 x 15.25. In good to very good condition, with complete separation to vertical fold, scattered soiling and light staining, and a few tiny tears and chips, no faults affecting the clear, dark signature. R&R COA.
