Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island (1707–1785) and a delegate to the Continental Congress. Partially printed DS, signed “Step. Hopkins,” one page, 11.5 x 6.5, May 12, 1760. An appointment for Josiah Kind as Justice of the Peace in Johnston, Rhode Island. The embossed seal remains intact at upper left. Matted and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 18.5 x 19.25. Several old tape stains (one to first letter of signature), complete and partial separations at folds and a few chips, small holes, and light damp stains, otherwise very good condition. Apart from the tape stain noted above, the signature is dark and otherwise unaffected. In his 1995 reference History Comes to Life, Kenneth Rendell places Hopkins’ autograph material into the “rare” category among the Signers. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
