Description

TWO SPANIARDS: PICASSO inscribes a book with an original drawing and a tribute to legendary cellist PABLO CASALS

Outstanding original ink drawing of a dove with an olive branch in its beak flying over a striped shield, 7 x 10.5, signed and inscribed, “Picasso, 7.8.60, Viva en Pau Casals.” The drawing is on an intact front blank in a copy of the softcover book Les Grands Interprètes: Pablo Casals by Bernard Gavoty (Geneva: René Kister, 1955). The subject of the book, famed Spanish cellist Pablo Casals (1876–1973), has added in his own hand below Picasso’s tribute, “Merci Picasso!” and has signed on the opposite page, “Au cher Lowenguth [probably violinist Alfred Lowenguth of the Lowenguth Quartet], Pablo Casals.” The book itself is lightly worn, the jacket torn and separated from the plain cardboard covers; apart from some light marginal soiling that does not touch the image or signature (evidently erasable, though we leave this up to the purchaser), the drawing itself is in fine, bright condition and most handsome for display. A splendid image with a most notable association! R&R COA.
