American playwright and screenwriter (1905–1984) best known for such classics as The Children’s Hour, The Little Foxes, and Watch on the Rhine. Two items: TLS, signed “Warmly, Lillian,” one page, 6 x 7.75, personal letterhead, February 15, 1950. Hellman writes to multiple-Tony-winning producer Gilbert Miller (1884–1970). In part: “I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed seeing ‘The Cocktail Party’ [produced by Miller]. It is a very fine production and good to hear English being spoken as English should be spoken. I still have some of the same reservations about the play as when I read the script, but they don’t matter.” Also included: TLS, signed “Lillian,” one page, 6 x 7.75, personal letterhead, November 1, 1949. Another letter to Miller, sending thanks for a gift of flowers, evidently sent for the opening of Hellman’s Miller-produced play Montserrat, which debuted on October 29. A hint of subtle soiling to second letter, otherwise fine, crisp condition. R&R COA.
