“I ... only wish my autograph were better worth the trouble you have taken”

American editor and author (1788–1879) best known for penning the classic nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” ALS signed “Sarah J. Hale,” one page, 6.25 x 8, January 18, 1856. Hale writes to Mrs. W. H. Kilby in Eastport, Maine. In full: “I am happy to comply with your kind request and only wish my autograph were better worth the trouble you have taken.” Faint mailing folds touching signature and slight trimming to left edge, well away from text, otherwise fine condition.
