Description

American Revolutionary general. He fought against the Native Americans and served in the colonial assembly before the advent of the American Revolution. In the war his gallant defense of a small fort on Sullivan's Island (later named Fort Moultrie) prevented Sir Henry Clinton and Sir Peter Parker from taking Charleston, South Carolina. After the war he served as governor of South Carolina. DS, signed “Willm Moultrie,” two pages, 15.5 x 11, State of South Carolina letterhead, February 3, 1794. Document signed as governor of South Carolina, granting David Coates 1000 acres of land in the district of Orangebourgh. Signed at the bottom in black ink. Second page bears a diagram of the land. In fine condition, with previous folds, light toning to edges and a bit of mild soiling. Moultrie’s signature is bold and prevalent at the bottom. R&R COA.
