Description

American army engineer who designed and built the ironclad Monitor for the US government. Terrific lot of five ALSs, four signed “J. Ericsson,” and one signed “J. E.,” dated between 1859 and1860. One excerpt concerning the building of a water works reads, in part, “Two weeks ago I should hardly have thought it worth the trouble to entertain the…water works question, but now I would not have the slightest hesitation in actually commencing building. 4,000,000 in 24 hours demands an engine that can move nearly 2800 gallons a minute.” Expected mild toning and folds, a few pencil notations, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
