Hand-addressed envelope from the Monongahela House in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 6 x 3.25, addressed in Garfield’s hand to “Mrs. J. A. Garfield, (Care Thomas Garfield) Newburgh, O.” On the reverse of the envelope, Lucretia Garfield writes, “This old envelope was addressed to me by General Garfield, consequently contains his own signature, and belongs to the [Civil] War period.” Signed at the conclusion “Lucretia Garfield.” Apparently a collector wrote to Mrs. Garfield, seeking an autograph of her late husband, with Mrs. Garfield sending this one, with the explanation on the reverse. In very good condition, with light overall toning, some slight fading to envelope and signature, separated bottom edge (so both sides are visible) and light adhesive remnants. R&R COA.
