An abrupt end to a brief presidency: Garfield presentation including a cabinet photo published in the year of his death and a franked envelope addressed to his wife

Impressive free-franked envelope, 5.25 x 3.25, signed at upper right, “J. A. Garfield MC” with embossed Sherman House Chicago return address, addressed in Garfield’s hand to Mrs. J. A. Garfield, Hiram, Portage Co. Ohio. Beautifully matted and framed with a sepia cabinet photo of Garfield as President to an overall size of 9 x 15. The photo’s publication date is 1881; Garfield was shot on July 2 of that year and died on September 19. In fine condition, with ink postal cancellation touching a portion of the franking signature.
