Description

Monet pauses while painting the Nympheas series to answer Amand Gautier, the man who gave him his start

French painter who worked in the open air, perfecting the style known as Impressionism, in which light and color are rendered as actually perceived. ALS in French, two pages, 4.5 x 7, September 11, 1889. Letter to Amand Gautier, who helped Monet get his start by giving him a spot at the Salon. In full, “I rush to answer your letter. Unfortunately I leave tomorrow on a short excursion in Normandie but immediately upon my return some eight days from now I will have to go to Paris for a few days. I will let you know early on what day and at what time I’ll arrive. I am placing myself at your disposition. I will be very happy to be of assistance to you.” Monet adds a postscript: “If what you want of me is urgent you could still write to me at Giverny, where they would forward it to me. C. M.” In fine condition, with a even overall shade of mild toning and a bisecting horizontal mailing fold. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
