Only the second Paca document we’ve offered

He was a local leader in the patriot movement in the late 1770s. Elected to the State Legislature of Maryland in 1771, he was appointed to the Continental Congress in 1774. He was reelected and served there until 1779 when he was appointed chief justice of the State of Maryland. In 1782 he was elected governor of that state. DS, signed “Wm. Paca,” as Governor of Maryland, one page, 7.25 x 4.25, January 4, 1785. Pay order. Reads, in part: “…Ordered. That the western Shore Treasurer Pay to Thomas Johnson Junr Paymaster of the Barges two hundred pounds out of the money appropriated for the Barges on account…” Also signed on the reverse by Johnson, after the words “Defence of the [Chesapeake] Bay,” acknowledging receipt of payment. A couple of minor pinholes, light soiling, vertical folds, otherwise very good condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
