Description

Kind words for a fellow officer: “I can only testify to the high appreciation in which he was held by all his comrades…his high sense of honor, his deep religious feeling…and a keen sense of humor made him at all times a representative man in the Army.”

Credited with the invention of modern baseball, Doubleday was also the Union general who supposedly aimed the first gun on the Confederates. Neatly penned ALS signed “Abner Doubleday, Bvt. Maj. Genl, U. S. Army,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, June 22, 1883. Letter to the father of a fellow officer. In part, “I am glad that a biographical sketch of your father is to be published but regret that I cannot furnish any special incidents in his career…I can only testify to the high appreciation in which he was held by all his comrades…his high sense of honor, his deep religious feeling…and a keen sense of humor made him at all times a representative man in the Army and a general favorite. When I was associated with him before the war we were in garrisons where our lives flowed smoothly and evenly.” In fine condition, with expected folds. COA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
