Scalloped-top vellum DS signed by Jefferson as president, “Th: Jefferson,” and Madison as Secretary of State, one page, 11.75 x 18.75, December 23, 1803. Pass reads, in part, “By the President of the United States of America Suffer the Ship Charles Dixie Wildes master or commander of the burthen of two hundred and twenty seven tons or thereabouts mounted with no gun navigated with ten men, to pass with her company passengers goods and merchandise, without any hindrance, seizure or molestation: the said ship appearing, by good testimony, to belong to one or more of the Citizens of the United States and to him or them only.” Signed at the bottom by Jefferson and Madison. Trimmed down in size and in very good condition, with mild toning and soiling, cracked but intact seal, expected folds, signatures a shade or two light, but completely legible and mounting remnants to reverse.
