DS, signed “Th: Jefferson,” one page, 8.5 x 6.5, July 20, 1780. Unissued military appointment, in which Governor of Virginia Thomas Jefferson appoints a rank of second lieutenant. Signed at the conclusion in ink by Jefferson. In fair condition, with document having been professionally silked, chipping along edges and noticeable paper loss at bottom center, folds, scattered soiling heaviest at upper right, and Jefferson’s signature very light, but mostly legible.
