Lot #299
Watergate

Signed quotes from ten Watergate principals, including John J. Sirica: “Members of Congress who put politics aside to do their unpleasant jobs, or the news reporters who wouldn’t drop a story when they were under pressure to do so, the so-called heroes of Watergate were no more than people doing what was right, doing their jobs whether they were scared or exhausted or being criticized, or were all alone.”

Description

Signed quotes from ten Watergate principals, including John J. Sirica: “Members of Congress who put politics aside to do their unpleasant jobs, or the news reporters who wouldn’t drop a story when they were under pressure to do so, the so-called heroes of Watergate were no more than people doing what was right, doing their jobs whether they were scared or exhausted or being criticized, or were all alone.”

Lot of twelve items, including ten hand-calligraphed quotes (done in another hand), attributed to men closely associated with the Watergate hearings, and signed by each individual at the conclusion. Included: Archibald Cox (“In my view, Watergate proved the conscience of the nation as well as the ability of a self-governing people to vindicate, by the process of open government, their own moral sense”); Samuel Dash; Daniel Ellsberg (“In releasing the Pentagon Paper I acted in hope I still hold: that truths that changed me could help Americans free themselves and other victims from our longest war.”); Charles Colson (“I reflected back on the men with whom I served - Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell, Nixon. They had been trapped as well - by their own pretensions of power.”); John J. Sirica (“…or members of Congress who put politics aside to do their unpleasant jobs, or the news reporters who wouldn’t drop a story when they were under pressure to do so, the so-called heroes of Watergate were more than people doing what was right, doing their jobs whether they were scared or exhausted or being criticized, or were all alone.”); Alexander M. Haig, Jr.; Richard Helms; Egil Krogh Jr. (“At the time, in 1972, I thought that what we were doing was dictated inescapably by the national security interests.”); Elliot L. Richardson; Peter W. Rodino. Also included: an TLS from Sirica acknowledging his signing the calligraphed quote, and a TLS from Archibald Cox, acknowledging his signing of the quote. In overall fine condition, with the occasional mild crease or corner bend. R&R COA.
