Description

Asked to fire Archibald Cox, Richardson tenders his resignation to President Nixon : “I trust that you understand that I could not in the light of these firm and repeated commitments carry out your direction that this be done. I feel that I have no choice but to resign.”

Souvenir typescript of the resignation submitted by Richardson at the height of the Watergate scandal. In part: “It is with great regret…At the time you appointed me, you gave me the authority to name a special prosecutor…A few days before my confirmation hearing, I announced that I would, if confirmed, appoint a special prosecutor…While I fully respect the reason that have led you to conclude the Special Prosecutor must be discharged, I trust that you understand that I could not in the light of these firm and repeated commitments carry out your direction that this be done. I feel that I have no choice but to resign.” Signed in blue felt tip at the conclusion. R&R COA.
