Description

Mining magnate, owner of the San Francisco Daily Examiner, and founder of the Hearst fortune; he expanded sensationalistic journalism. ALS signed “W. R. H.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, New York Journal letterhead, no date. Letter to a Mr. Moffett. In full, “I was much interested in the pension editorial which told all the money expended would do. That is a good line. Keep it up and illustrate it. Suppose you get hold of Evrey and have him make a little cartoon for each article and get up a number of articles each one serving to show what a great thing could be done or what great burden could be relieved by the money spent for pensions. Subjects not illustratable by cartoons could be enlivened by diagrams as the Press used with the tariff.” Matted and framed with a transcript of the letter, to an overall size of 21.25 x 17. In very good condition, with text of letter light but legible, with signature a few shades lighter than text, expected folds and some light toning. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
