Born Joseph Alois Ratzinger on April 16, Holy Saturday, 1927, in Marktl am Inn, Bavaria, Germany, was elected the 265th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on April 19, 2005. He was formally enthroned during the Papal Inauguration Mass on April 24, 2005. The ceremony is, however, symbolic: he assumed complete papal authority the moment he accepted his election in the conclave.
