ALS, as president, signed “A. Lincoln,” one page, 5 x 8, Executive Mansion letterhead, July 20, 1863. Letter pertaining to the promotion of Colonel Charles G. Harker. In full, “Today, Mr. Stratton of New Jersey calls and urges the appointment of as a Brig. General of Col. Charles G. Harker, now commanding a brigade in Rosencrans’ Army. He says Gen. Rosencrans speaks of him in his report of the battle of Murfreesboro & recommends him for promotion.” Harker graduated at the United States military academy in 1858, entered the 2nd infantry, and became 1st lieutenant of the 15th infantry, in May 1861. He was promoted captain in October 1861, became lieutenant-colonel of the 65th Ohio volunteers, and colonel in November 1861. He was engaged in the battle of Shiloh and the siege of Corinth and the battle of Stone River, and was recommended for promotion, but did not receive it until he had still further distinguished himself at Chickamauga and Chattanooga. He was made brigadier-general of volunteers, to date from September 20, 1863, commanded a brigade under General Howard in the campaign in Georgia, and held the peak of Rocky Face Ridge, May 7, 1864, against determined efforts of the enemy to dislodge him. He was killed at the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, June 27, 1864. In fine condition, with light soiling mostly to edges, and a bisecting fold passing through the “n” in Lincoln’s surname; the letter has been professionally cleaned, deacidified, and encapulated in easily removable acid-free material.
