Description

Lincoln appoints a Captain in the Cavalry

DS as president, one page, 14.25 x 17.5, June 5, 1863. President Lincoln appoints George B. Sanford to the rank of “Captain in the First Regiment of Cavalry.” Signed at the bottom “Abraham Lincoln,” and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Matted and framed to an overall size of 21.75 x 25. Sanford had served with the First and Second Dragoons in the West during the opening months of the Civil War, and had later campaigned with Grant and Sheridan in the eastern theater. Most of his subsequent service was in the trans-Mississippi West. In very good condition, with scattered toning, intact but worn seal, handwritten text a bit light, as is Stanton signature and expected folds, with Lincoln’s signature largely unaffected. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
