Description

Third-person ALS, one page, 8 x 9, September 24, 1803. Five months before his successful negotiation of The Louisiana Purchase, Monroe writes, in part, “Mr. Monroe presents his compliments to Francis Murray & Co: I request they will be pleased to send him by the bearer five hundred pounds to be plac’d to the account of his salary. The purpose to place this amt. to that acct., till we hear from the Secretary of State the sum that will be allowed him by was of and fit, on the several millions with which he has been borrowed.” From 1803-1807, Monroe was Minister to Great Britain, a job that he found increasingly difficult as he was not successful in convincing the British to abandon their policy of impressment of US citizens, the largest problem in US British relations. In very good condition, with some light edge toning, small chip to right edge, short tear to lower edge, and some minor splitting along folds. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
