Natural scientist who formulated the theory of evolution, a highly controversial stance that challenged the established norms of science and religion. ALS signed 'Ch. Darwin,' three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8.5, no date. Letter to a Mr. Meldola. In full, 'When I read F. M. paper your inst't it occurred to me; and I must say that I'd rather have expected that the knowledge of distasteful caterpillars would have become inherited. But I distinctly remember an account (when Wettea...his warning colors) published some birds, I think turkeys, being experimented on, and they shook their heads after trying some caterpillars as if they had a horrid taste in their mouths. I fancied that this was published by Mr. Weir or could it have been Mr. Butler? It would be well to look in Betts Nicerogue, as he tried some experiments and I am not sure that there is not some statement of the kind in it.' Darwin also adds a short postscript, 'I remember the statement of some birds shaking their heads to which I refer.' In very good condition, with some light edge wear and toning, small caption affixed to back of second page, resulting in a heavier spot of toning and show through under signature and expected folds. Nice item with a great example of Darwin's theories. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
