Description

'You need no assurance of my interest in whatever relates to the education and elevation of the freedmen of the South.'

Reformer and abolitionist. Garrison campaigned against everything from liquor to prostitution to the treatment of Indians, and founded the famous anti-slavery journal The Liberator. ALS signed 'Wm. Lloyd Garrison,' one page, 5 x 8 lightly lined stationery, Boston, September 26, 1865. A letter to Rev. J.R. Shipherd. In part: 'I very much regret that I shall not be able to attend the session of the Managers of the American Freedmen's Aid Commission, as at that time I am pledged and advertised to give an address at an agricultural fair. You need no assurance of my interest in whatever relates to the education and elevation of the freedmen of the South. I trust the Commission will speedily devise the most effective measures for the consummation of this grand object.' In fine condition, with edge toning, a tack hole in the upper left, a vertical fold touching one letter of the signature and a chip to the right edge, affecting nothing, 'Wm. Lloyd Garrison' is also written in another hand in the upper right corner. RRAuction COA.
