'The Chief of Ordinance, U. S. Navy Dept., advises us that he wishes the barrels of the 2 Gatling guns, recently ordered by the Navy Dept, to be 24 inches in length.'

Inventor of the eponymous machine gun which has been estimated to have killed over 250,000 men since 1862. LS signed 'R. J. Gatling,' one page, 5 x 8, Gatling Gun Company letterhead, June 20, 1884. Gatling writes to the Colt Firearms Factory. In full, 'The Chief of Ordinance, U. S. Navy Dept., advises us that he wishes the barrels of the 2 Gatling guns, recently ordered by the Navy Dept, to be 24 inches in length - which please note.' In fine condition, with some light feathering to signature, toning to top edge and a pencil notation along bottom. RRAuction COA.
