Description

“Went to see a publisher…I will know by Friday whether I will sign a contract with them & get an advance.”

News photographer cum photojournalist whose images of murder, mayhem and other dramatic events appeared regularly in the New York press during the thirties and forties. Although stories differ as to how he came to use the name "Weegee," the most colorful is based upon his claiming with varying degrees of seriousness that his "psychic powers" enabled him to be first at the scene of crimes, fires, accidents and the like. ALS, two pages both sides, 5.5 x 7, Mapleton Hotel letterhead, no date. Letter to Wilma Wilcox. In part, 'Went to see a publisher...I will know by Friday whether I will sign a contract with them and get an advance. They want to publish the book but are afraid I will ask for too much money. I will see what they have to offer (and take anything within reason). If I sign the contract Friday...This will be a glorious finish to your vacation.' In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Weegee's hand, with his signature appearing in the return address area, however a portion of it is missing and it is also obscured by a piece of tape.
