Description

NASA Distinguished Service Medal awarded to Edgar Mitchell for "his outstanding contributions to manned space flight and scientific exploration as Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 14"

NASA Distinguished Service Medal issued to Edgar Mitchell in 1971, measuring 1.75˝ in diameter and suspended from a 1.5˝ long navy-and-teal ribbon pin. The gold-colored medal features an emblem encircled by engraved text, "Distinguished Service, NASA," and is engraved on the reverse with the name of the award's recipient, "Edgar D. Mitchell." The medal is housed in its original presentation box, stamped "Distinguished Service Medal" on the lid, along with its ribbon bar and pin. Additionally includes a smaller version of the medal, with pin and rosette, housed in a separate presentation box.

Complete with the original 10.5 x 13.5 framed diploma, signed by Acting Administrator of NASA George M. Low, in part: "The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Awards to Edgar D. Mitchell the NASA Distinguished Service Medal for his outstanding contributions to manned space flight and scientific exploration as Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 14. He achieved a precise landing in the rugged Fra Mauro area of the moon, collected geologic samples, deployed and activated scientific experiments to obtain new insight into the formation of the solar system, and proved man's ability to perform scientific exploration in extensive traverses of the lunar surface." In overall fine condition.

The NASA Distinguished Service Medal is the highest award that may be bestowed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States: it may be presented to any member of the federal government, including both military astronauts and civilian employees.

Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Karlyn Mitchell, the daughter of Edgar Mitchell.
