Description

Typed letter with an autopen signature of NASA administrator Michael D. Griffin, one page, 8 x 10.75, NASA letterhead, January 31, 2006. Letter to Apollo 14 moonwalker Edgar D. Mitchell, in part: "Congratulations on receiving your well deserved NASA Ambassador of Exploration Award. What a tremendous honor for you to share with your family and the many friends and supporters of the South Florida Science Museum.

The purpose of these awards is to recognize the tremendous contributions America's first generation of astronauts have made to space exploration and to help inspire a new generation to carry the torch of exploration throughout the solar system. Your outstanding service as the lunar module pilot on Apollo 14, mankind's third lunar landing mission, demonstrated the essence of our Ambassador of Exploration Awards. It is most fitting that you receive this award on February 5th, recognizing that exactly 35 years ago today, Alan Shepard and yourself were stepping out on the Moon for your first of two exploration adventures in the Fra Mauro highlands.

The men and women of NASA are now engaged in the work that will enable our Nation to return humans to the Moon, send robotic explorers and, ultimately, human pioneers to Mars, and explore other destinations in our solar system and beyond. In taking on this challenge, we welcome the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of those heroic astronauts who blazed our first pathway beyond Earth. Edgar, we owe you a great debt of gratitude. Please accept my congratulations on being recognized for your significant contributions to the exploration of space." Framed and in fine condition.

Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Karlyn Mitchell, the daughter of Edgar Mitchell.
