Description

Buchanan announces former Texas President Mirabeau B. Lamar as ambassador to Nicaragua

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, January 20, 1858. President Buchanan authorizes and directs the "Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to the Envelope of a letter addressed to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Nicaragua, accrediting Mr. Mirabeau B. Lamar, as Minister Resident of the United States." In fine condition, with faint toning along the folds and edges.

Noteworthy politician Mirabeau B. Lamar (1798–1859) is best known as a leading political figure during the Texas Republic era, serving as the second president of the Republic of Texas after Sam Houston. In later years, President James Buchanan appointed Lamar as the Minister to Nicaragua, and a few months later to Costa Rica. He served in Managua for 20 months before returning to Texas in October 1859 because of poor health.

From the Collection of Paul K. Carr, former UACC President and Noted Expert.
