ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 8.5, Legation of the United States at London letterhead, December 8, 1853. Handwritten letter to a William Henry Rawle, in part: "Immediately after my arrival in this country, I renewed my acquaintance with Ladies Wellesley & Stafford, & afterwards formed that of the Duchess of Leeds. Lady Wellesley is now in wretched health from dropsy; & it is apprehended, cannot long survive…The other ladies, also, stand high. I was gratified to discover that notwithstanding their long absence, they still retain strong American feelings. They, particularly Lady Stafford, have conversed much and write me about their lands in Pennsylvania…the conclusion at which I have arrived is, that they have no correct understanding of their rights. I have constantly refused to express any legal opinion to them upon the subject, not only for want of a clear & authentic statement of the facts; but because, as I have often assured them I did not feel myself confident to the task, having been out of the profession for twenty years…In regard to the value of the land,—of which they have evidently formed a high estimate, I told them, if there was coal upon it, as they believe, it might be very valuable…When I next see them shall endeavor as a friend, certainly not as a lawyer, to have the whole affair placed on a satisfactory footing."
