Description

President Buchanan dispatches a New Bedford whaler to the Pacific Ocean

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 22 x 17, August 2, 1858. Four-language ship's pass issued to "Francis E. Stranberg, master or commander of the Ship called Congress…lying at present in the port of New Bedford, bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions, Stores and Utensils for the Pacific Ocean." Crisply and prominently signed at the center by President James Buchanan, and countersigned by Secretary of State Lewis Cass. The white paper seal affixed at the bottom remains intact. Nicely mounted, suede-matted, and framed with a portrait and plaque to an overall size of 38.5 x 25.5. In fine condition, with two small stains to the top edge. United States ships carried four-language sea letters in the 18th and 19th centuries to show ownership, nationality, cargo, and destination. A desirable piece of whaling history, boldly signed by President Buchanan.
