Original invitation and menu for Abraham Lincoln's 1865 presidential inauguration and subsequent inaugural ball, held respectively on March 4th and 6th, 1865. Engraved by Dempsey & O'Toole, the unissued partly-printed invitation for the "National Inaugural Ball, March 4th, 1865,” 7.25 x 10, features images of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, a Liberty cap, two American eagles atop columns, and a list of “managers.” The menu, entitled “Bill of Fare of the Presidential Inauguration Ball in the City of Washington, D.C., On the 6th of March 1865,” 5.5 x 10.5, features an array of culinary delights and delicacies such as “Oyster Stews,” “Filet de Beef,” “Quail,” lobster salad, and a variety of desserts. Text to the lower portion reads: “Furnished by G. A. Balzer, Confectioner.” In overall very good to fine condition, with light staining and a crease to the menu.
