Headlines include: “The Rejoicing,” “How the Glorious News is Received,” “The Great Jubilee Throughout the Country.” Extensive reporting on the outpouring of relief and happiness, including reports of how the news was conveyed to the public schools, “after a reading of the Scriptures and the customary prayers, the glorious news was read and explained after which the joyous children were dismissed.” Transcription of a letter by the Chairman of the Customs House to President Lincoln, “we have the honour to transmit herewith an address signed by influential citizens of New York asking that a day be set apart for a national day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God in recognition of his gracious goodness to us as a people in protecting us through the perils of civil war and giving us the promise of a happy future.” Wonderful paper putting you in the moment of the joy and happiness which the news brought to the country.
