Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 11, August 25, 1868. President Johnson directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “my Proclamation of a Treaty between the United States and the Northern Cheyenne and Northern Arapahoe tribes of Indians, concluded May 10th 1868.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson. The document is affixed by its left edge inside a presentation folder, which also bears a printed copy of the 'Treaty with the Northern Cheyenne and Northern Arapaho, 1868.” In fine condition.
One month after the U.S. and Sioux Indians signed the important Fort Laramie Treaty of April 1868, which created the Great Sioux Reservation, the Northern Arapahoe and Northern Cheyenne signed this treaty and were given the option of either settling in land reserved for their southern counterparts or moving to the Sioux reserve created by that April 1868 Fort Laramie treaty. Most chose the latter. ‘Still, until 1875, they retained off-reservation hunting privileges, and this, among other things, produced continuing collisions with whites.’ This tension was heightened when George Armstrong Custer's illegal reconnaissance of the Black Hills reported ‘gold at the roots of the grass,’ producing a stampede of miners and ultimately leading to the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, where the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe defeated Custer and the 7th Cavalry Regiment.
