Description

Attractive partly-printed DS as president, one page, 17 x 10.5, March 18, 1873. President Grant appoints Charles W. Eckman as “Deputy Postmaster at Danville, in the State of Pennsylvania.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by both U. S. Grant and by Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. The original embossed white seal remains affixed to the lower left corner. In fine condition, with faint toning over the right half of the document.

Charles Wesley Eckman (1837-1906), a Pennsylvania native, served from 1861 to 1865 in the Civil War, rising in rank from a private in the Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Union Army to a colonel commanding a brigade in the Army of the Potomac. He was wounded three times. After the war, his pursuits in Danville included the mercantile business and oil refinery business. He served 17 years as Danville’s postmaster.
