Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “J. Tyler,” one page, 11.5 x 8.25, July 8, 1843. President Tyler appoints Joel S. Kennard as a “Passed Midshipman in the Navy of the United States.” Signed crisply at the conclusion by John Tyler and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Abel P. Upshur. The lower left is embossed with the Navy Department seal. In very good condition, with soiling, staining, and multiple vertical folds.
