Description

TLS as a California senator, one page, 8 x 10.5, United States Senate (Committee on Labor and Public Welfare) letterhead, May 12, 1952. Letter to Preston S. Moses of the California and Hawaiian Sugar Refining Corporation, in full: “Thank you for your letter of May 7, and I do remember with pleasure my visit at the Crockett Club. I am very glad to have your personal comments in support of restoration of the appropriation for the promotion of rifle practice, and you may be sure that I shall consider this item carefully when the Military Appropriations Bill comes before me on the Senate floor. Mrs. Nixon joins me in sending our best wishes.” In fine condition.

Moses (1889-1977), a California native, and his family lived in Crocket. He was a manager at the sugar company, which shipped raw cane sugar from Hawaii and refined it in California for the U.S. market. The Crockett Club, built by the sugar company, hosted civic, sports, and social events. Groups, such as the National Rifle Association, supported an allocation in the 1952-53 Military Appropriations Bill for $130,000 to support civilians clubs training young men, including future soldiers, in rifle marksmanship. The bill had provided for the training in previous years, but Congress tried to drop it as part of attempt to restrain Korean War expenses. Moses wrote Nixon in support of restoring the training money.
