Description

"While I was confident that my own state would come through again as it did in our campaign in 1950, the majority of almost 700,000 votes exceeded even our most optimistic expectations"

TLS, one page, 8 x 10, Office of the Vice President letterhead, April 14, 1953. Letter to Arthur F. Day in California, in part: "From the day we returned to Washington on November 5 I have been wanting to write to you but, because of the heavy volume of mail we received during the post-election and inaugural periods, this is the first opportunity I have had to express my personal appreciation for all that you did to make possible our overwhelming victory.

As we campaigned in other states we were often asked, 'How will California go?' While I was confident that my own state would come through again as it did in our campaign in 1950, the majority of almost 700,000 votes exceeded even our most optimistic expectations, and I know that the major credit for this result belongs to those who worked and contributed so unselfishly to the campaign.

I would not want to allow this opportunity to pass without emphasizing the necessity for all of us to continue our activities for the cause of good government. I am sure you will agree with me that the President has shown in his first few weeks in office that he can and will give the country the leadership it needs during this critical period. But in order to put through his program he must have a majority in the House and Senate which will constantly support him. For that reason, I think that right now we should do everything we can toward planning for an effective campaign in the Congressional elections of 1954." In fine condition.
