Description

World War II-dated TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, August 31, 1943. Letter to Dr. William P. Terrell, Chief of the Field Division at the Federal Communications Commission, in full: “I take the occasion of your retirement from Federal Service to convey to you my thanks and gratitude for the forty years' service in the field of governmental radio services. You can well be proud of the record you have made.” In very good condition, with overall dampstaining affecting appearance. Accompanied by the original White House mailing envelope and by an official invitation for a reception at the White House on January 12, 1928; the latter also includes its White House envelope.

Dr. William 'Bill' Dandridge Terrell (1871-1965), a Virginia native, was a top U.S. radio expert whose work included oversight of the development of the cutting-edge technology of wireless radio communication. The new radio wave telegraphy, sending and receiving long-distance signals through the air, was first used around the beginning of the 20th Century. The Wireless Ship Act of 1910 required US passenger ships to have the new equipment for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication. In 1911 Terrell became the first U.S. Wireless Ship Inspector for the Department of Commerce and Labor, working out of the New York City Customs House.
