DS, signed “F. D. Roosevelt,” one page, 10.5 x 8, no date. An ‘Issue of Orders’ document from the Navy Department, issued to “Major General Commandant, U.S. Marine Corps,” which lists the cost for six officers to travel for assignment from New York to Quantico, Virginia. Signed neatly at the conclusion by Franklin D. Roosevelt as Acting Secretary of the Navy. In fine condition.
These May 7, 1919 orders were listed in the official Army and Navy Registry from May 10, 1919 on page 600. These soldiers from the Fourth Brigade of the American Expeditionary Force Second Division were returning to the U.S. during the occupation of Germany after World War I. Most of these Marines, including Captain Douglass Percy Wingo with the 97th Company of the Sixth Regiment of the Fourth Brigade, were honorably discharged soon after arriving at the home base in Virginia. After the war Wingo (1896-1993), a Georgia native raised in Alabama, worked as a teacher at Marion (AL) Military Institute and coach at Birmingham Southern College while he got his law degree. The combat veteran worked as a respected attorney in Birmingham for half a century, including a stint as President of the Birmingham Bar Association.
