American author and Unitarian clergyman (1822–1909) remembered for his short story 'The Man Without a Country.' ALS signed “Edw. E. Hale,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, South Congregational Church letterhead, October 16, 1891. Handwritten letter to a friend, in part: "It is Margie Marquard whose daughter Greta is engaged...Greta—really (Margaret) is one of the loveliest girls in the world:—perfectly unaffected and unselfish. And they are both, I am glad to say, as happy as they ought to be. We have always known Greta...she seems at most like one of my own children." In fine condition, with two old tape stains on the signed side.
