American author (1836-1902) best known for his colorful tales of California pioneers, including the much-anthologized story 'The Outcasts of Poker Flat.' Scarce vintage matte-finish 9 x 11.5 photo of the Gold Rush writer by Walter Shaw of Camberley, neatly signed in the lower border in ink, "Bret Harte." Affixed to a same-size mount and in very good to fine condition, with corner dings to the mount, a small crease to the lower left area of the image, and light overall silvering. Harte is uncommon in signed photographs, especially in this larger size.
