Uncommon winner’s medal for fencing from the Tokyo 1964 Summer Olympics. Bronze, 63 mm, 70 gm, by Toshikaka Koshiba (based on the classic design of Giuseppe Cassioli); manufactured by the Japanese Mint. The front is inscribed, "XVII Olympiad Tokyo 1964, Fencing," and features a 'Seated Victory' with the Colosseum in the background; the reverse depicts a victorious athlete being carried by several jubilant athletes. The medal lacks its outer ring and ribbon.
Eight fencing events were contested at the 1964 Summer Olympics, with men competing in both individual and team events for each of the three weapon types (épée, foil and sabre), and women competing only in individual and team foil events. Bronze medals were won by the Soviet Union, Poland, France, Italy, and United Team of Germany.
