Rare and magnificent complete set of unawarded gold, silver, and bronze winner's medals from the Mexico City 1968 Summer Olympics. Based on the classic design by Giuseppe Cassioli, the medals measure 60 mm in diameter and weigh 125 gm (gilt silver), 124 gm (silver), and 100 gm (bronze). The front of each medal, inscribed, "XIX Olimpiada Mexico 1968," features a 'Seated Victory' with the Colosseum in the background; the reverse of each medal depicts a victorious athlete with a palm branch being carried by several jubilant athletes. Small plaques attached to the top of the medals feature pictograms representing three different events: rowing, shooting, and weightlifting. The medals are housed in a handsome velvet-lined black leather presentation box, with white text inside the lid: "XIX Olimpiada, Mexico, 1968." Also includes a set of winner's pins in gold, silver, and bronze, featuring miniature duplicates of the larger Mexico City winner’s medals, suspended from small upper plaques featuring pictograms for the rowing event. A fabulous, complete presentation of winner's medals from the historic 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City.
