Apollo-era Ground Support Equipment Drum Memory Unit (DMU), measuring 12″ x 8.75″ x 19.25″ and weighing 46 lbs, with the handled front bearing an International Business Machines Corp. parts label: “Serial No. MSFC01, Part No. 6201500-2, Drum Memory Unit, Contract NAS 8-1400 M-1966, Mfr. Code 03640.” The back features four ports and is stamped above, “673623-101.” In fine condition, with scattered scuffs and marks.
The DMU was primarily used for storing and retrieving data related to the guidance, navigation, and control systems of the Apollo spacecraft and lunar modules. It ensured that the spacecraft had access to the necessary data for safe and successful missions to the Moon. As technology advanced, it gave way to more efficient and compact memory storage solutions.
