Varick later served as Washington's private secretary, mayor of New York, and a New York state legislator. Partly-printed DS, signed "Rich. Varick," one page, 8.25 x 13, March 4, 1795. License approval for Cortlandt Van Beuren to keep "an Inn or Tavern for retailing strong or spiritous Liquors." During that time, he will "not keep a disorderly Inn or Tavern…or permit any Cock-Fighting, Gaming or Playing with Cards or Dice, or keep any Billiard-Table." In very good to fine condition, with trivial edge loss, and archival tape repairs to fold splits on the reverse.
