Addressed from Brandy Station, a handwritten letter to Miss Bernice Shackelford, in part: “I have the honor to acknowledge your note of the 4th instant. Immediately upon its receipt, last evening, I addressed a note to Gen. Patrick, Provost Marshal General, inquiring the cause of your father's arrest, and the means to be taken to procure his release...General Barry in Washington, who was an intimate and warm friend of your uncle and who will, I am sure, use all his endeavors to effect the release of your father. With your uncle. our friendship [was] formed at West Point, was broken only by his death. He died in my arms no sixteen years since. I have a full sized painting of him which I value more than anything I possess...You may be assured that I will do my best for your father's release at as early a day as practicable.” Also included is an original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of John Sedgwick in his military uniform.
