Politician (1807-1894) who was a member of the Buchanan administration, later serving as Judge Advocate General of the Army. Most notably, he was the chief prosecutor in the trial of those accused of involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln. ALS signed “J. Holt,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, May 17, 1883. Handwritten letter to Horatio King, in part: "In my opinion, the…statement in reference to Mr. B should not be allowed to remain unchallenged. It has occurred to me that a step might be taken which would possibly result in placing the matter in a light different from that in which it now presents." In fine condition.
